Yoshi's Island and bite-sized play sessions
So, I never got to play Yoshi's Island as a kid. Not sure if it was always grabbed at the rental store or what, but I never really got a chance. Which sucks, cause man, this game is my shit. Like, this is Rose-core as heck. I'm loving it.
But what's great for me, right now, is that the levels are, at least so far, pretty short. Like, the tightness of the platforming aside, non-castle levels are sub-ten minutes. Now, I don't play a lot of platformers anymore, but compared to video games now where you're locked in for at least half an hour if you wanna accomplish anything, this feels great.
And it's perfect for me cause I need something bite-sized and quick, but still satisfying. It's nice to be able to pick it up and put it down quickly and still feel like I've done something. I've been grinding away at some old ass JRPGs--which I'm generally enjoying--so this is a nice change of pace in some ways. Much more demanding of my immediate focus, but each interaction with the game is relatively short.
This is great for me during my grading sessions because I always feel a li'l unsure what to do with the breaks in my pomodoro. Twenty on; five off is what I tend towards. If I go over on the five, it can get a little hairy. And if I'm under, I feel like I'm sort of cheating myself of that time and also not quite giving my brain enough of a rest. Yoshi's Island is perfect for this because I can get up, grab my miyoo and blow through a level. When I finish it, I can get back to work.
I'm sure levels will continue to get harder and maybe a little longer as I go, but for now, this is great distraction for those li'l breaks. Just been really enjoying this and wanted to yap about it a bit.
