The Rose Burrow

"What do we do?"

I'm a teacher. I teach first year composition at the college level. If you know me, you're already aware of this. But, that means that most of my students are in their late teens and early twenties. Just kids slowly coming into adulthood. I complain about them sometimes but I do love them in a way and I want them all to succeed. Today they asked me a question: "What do we do?"

I had to tell them, "I don't know. There's no simple answer." And I don't think they liked that answer and I don't either. So, I gave them the advice you've probably heard already: "don't give up. If there's one thing you take from my class today, don't give up. Allowing yourself to fall to nihilism lets them win." As I said to them, I say to you: Don't give up. Please. We need you around.
